Ensuring your business is a leader in health and wellbeing does not always mean the occasional wellbeing survey, an exercise class or a bowl of fruit. It is about your culture and your leaders, how you communicate and support your teams. Wellbeing is the state of being ‘comfortable, healthy or happy.’ It is about our mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing and, when these are stable and persist regardless of what’s going on in our world, we are able to flourish.
Wellbeing in the workplace leads to improved morale, stronger engagement, higher job satisfaction, better team work, increased productivity, reduced sickness levels and a more satisfied team. Leaders need to promote and build wellbeing, protect staff against things that might threaten wellbeing and respond when teams are finding things hard.
We live in a world that feels unstable at the moment, due to a global pandemic. Social isolation and home working have resulted in sustained anxieties around recession, the uncertainty of the future, issues with relationship building and communicating remotely and increased levels of loneliness. There is also inevitable effects on existing physical and mental health conditions, with deterioration potentially due to unavailability of treatment options. There may be an increase in coping strategies such as self-harm, dependencies such as alcohol or drugs and a life lived digitally and remotely may mean a fear about returning to the workplace eventually.
